Marriages are celebrated all across the country with people having great integrity and belief towards the power of the bond. The number of traditions and customs in India vary according to the religions followed by the people of country. It is said God is one, but present in many forms. It can be seen practised in India in true sense, with every second person following his own religion. People in India have found God in stones even. They stand true on the saying, “if you believe, there is God in a stone also”. In the same ways, there may be number of ways in which marriages are celebrated, but the essence of marriage remains the same. It is the bond formed between two souls which is for their lifetime. One of the communities in India, where marriages are considered to be purest of the unisons on earth, is Khatri community.

Khatri are the Punjabi Kshatriya living in the Northern part of India. They generally follow Hindu or Sikh religion and most of them believe in the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Khatri Matrimony can be witnessed mainly in the regions of Punjab, with most of its population in this region. Khatri ...
... are also said to play an eminent role in formation of Punjabi culture and they have taken the Punjabi traditions across the borders. Matrimonies in Khatri families are performed with great enthusiasm, with customs starting days before the actual wedding. The engagement rings are exchanged months before the wedding date, so that the Khatri matrimonial couple gets enough to prepare for the marriage. This also gives the time to bride and groom to know each other.

Khatri Matrimony in most of the families takes place in front of their religious scripture Guru Granth Sahib ji. Four vows are taken by the Khatri matrimony couple around their religious book, considered as their present Guru. Khatri are said to belong to an educated background, therefore have a modern approach towards life. They prefer marrying their children in sophisticated and well- settled families. The Khatri Matrimonial is performed within their religious group and community. In the earlier times, Hindu Khatri does not prefer marrying their children in Sikhs and Vice- versa. But, now days, situations are changing and many Khatri families can be seeing going according to the happiness of their children.

Khatri families enjoy a respectable status in the society, with their prominent contribution in the military services of the country. Khatri have surnames like Soni, Sahgal, Vohra, Bedi, Chopra, Sodhi, Talwar, Batta, Malhotra, Khanna, Seth, Kapoor, etc. The vibrant colours of Indian marriages can be truly experienced in Khatri Matrimony. Their weddings are very bright and full of vivacity with the element of Punjabi folk music in them. The energy and the fun in the wedding get doubled with the addition of Punjabi culture in it. Khatri Matrimony, itself hailing from Punjabi background looks so much like festivals. The happiness and the joy spread across the faces of the family members, makes the occasion a grand success.

The attire of the bride and the groom in every Indian wedding is different and so is the case with Khatri Matrimony. The wedding couple wears a proper Punjabi outfit, portraying the actual Punjabi traditions. The menu and the venue also goes along the Punjabi customs and in cities like Delhi, the decoration of the venue is sometimes like mini Punjab. The look and the feel of the place, takes the couple back to their original culture. All these things add flavours of enjoyment to the wedding ceremonies and bring contentment on the faces of both the families of bride and groom.
