2011 is here and if it is time to start thinking about getting your child a cell phone, or upgrading the phone they already have, I have put together a list of the different options you have.

Firefly glow Phone- This is another phone designed for preteens and children you think are too young to have a lot of features. The glow Phone does have voice mail but not a lot of other features. There are two big programmable keys meant for calling Mom and Dad but you can program any number into them. Parents can also set the glow Phone up where only certain numbers can be called out and received.

Buddy Bear Phone is a simplified GSM handset aimed at children in the 3-10 years old range. The Buddy Bear can only dial four pre-programmed numbers, or send a pre-programmed SMS message to four different recipients. There is a SOS button on either side of the bear's head. For added cuteness, LEDs flash in the bear's ears when it receives a call. There's no screen on the Buddy Bear which reduces cost and is one less thing to break. The Buddy Bear can be remotely controlled by parents who can block the phone with a PIN number if ...
... it is lost or stolen. It can also be turned into a remote baby monitor, so parents can listen to what is going on in their handset's vicinity without their child knowing. Parents can also remotely control the Buddy Bear's settings and will get an SMS if the handset gets a low battery. The phone is either remotely programmed from another mobile handset or via the USB cable. Buddy Bear's distributors also say that the handset has a very low SAR rating and is paint-free for added safety.

Advantages of Cell Phones for Kids
According to a May 16, 2009 article posted on About.com, “Kids and Cell Phones” by Vincent Inanely, M.D., a distinct advantage for parents allowing their children to have cell phones is that they can keep in touch with them, not only for day-to-day practical purposes, but for emergency situations as well. Parents who opt to get their children cell phones with a GPS have the added advantage of keeping track of where the children are at all times. This is particularly beneficial for parents of driving teens.
