Ipads Everywhere – Even When I’m Eating

Yesterday I had lunch at an upscale restaurant and the waiter was using an iPad. At first I thought it might be overkill or maybe a status thing but then the waiter showed how it works. I was way impressed with the software and how cleverly they have integrated the use of the iPad into the natural flow of the restaurant process.

First of all the app had all of the supporting tools for the waiter, the list of menu items, the costs, the descriptions, but even cooler was the suggested wine pairings. The waiter even showed me info about upcoming events. Once I convinced him to loan me one to play with while I was eating I saw even more cool features. In addition to all them menu stuff there was the ability to manage the payment process right from bill adjustments, credits, coupons and the ability to take credit card payment and even capture a signature – way cool.

There was also some manager functionality that the manager came over and showed me. He had a different login so also had different features he could use. I saw the restaurant layout and other management functions like sales summaries by the hour ...
... or day or week. Instant info on demand!

I very quickly realized that this was not a statement or a way to be ‘fancy’ or just an upscale thing, but a real step forward in restaurant systems and an iPad POS Systems will very quickly become the norm. I especially think iPad has a head start here because it has a one year jump on all the other tablet entrants. Android might catch up if someone makes some really good software but for now iPad owns the space and Ipad Point of Sale are ahead of the curve for sure.

I can easily see the day when not only every waiter has an iPad point of sale system so he can use the iPad POS features, but soon every customer could have one as well. I can see the great utility of self-driven ordering with all the information right there. Think of the cross promotion opportunities and marketing potential this has – there is no doubt that this is the future of iPad point of sale systems.
