A Peaceful Day In Delhi
Sanjay Van, Qutb Minar and Tughlaqabad
The hustle and bustle of Delhi city can be quite wearing. If you feel that you need a break you don’t need to go very far to escape and find a few peaceful oases within half an hour of Connaught Place. Head south to Sanjay Van, a wooded area with well marked tracks near Jawahar Lal Nehru University. In just an hour’s stroll we saw a sambar deer, bulbuls, peafowl, a buzzard, wrens and a green bee-eater. The track ends at an inviting Hindu temple but by turning right you can extend your walk to around 3kms returning to your starting point as quickly or slowly as your mood takes you.
Then on to the Qutb Minar complex. The Qutb is a 72 metre high tower engraved with verses of the Koran and was started in 1199 by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, a Turkish slave master who was appointed Governor of Delhi and went on to become Sultan. The Minar was erected to celebrate the Muslim victory over the Hindus in Northern India. Next to the tower stands India’s first mosque Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid (Might of Islam Mosque) and is reputed to have been built from the remains of 27 Hindu and Jain temples. ...
... Aibak died in 1210 and was succeeded by his son-in-law Iltutmish whose tomb lies to the west of the mosque. Square sided but covered by a dome, which has since collapsed, it is the earliest surviving example of an Indian ruler’s tomb as previously Hindus followed the practice of cremation.Tughlaqabad is about 7 kms east of Qutb Minar and is Delhi’s third city built by Ghazi Malik in the 1320s. Today the impressive old city walls, about 6 kms in circumference with a few ruined buildings, still give an idea of how extensive this city was. From the high spots within the city there is a superb view back over present day New Delhi and, as well as the bird and small mammal life, an occasional deer can be seen grazing amongst the ruins of the former capital of the Tughlaq rulers.
So if the crowds of Delhi become a bit much, hire a driver and head for some peace and quiet within a few kilometres of the city centre.
