If you’ve been exploring the possibility of buying Playa del Carmen real estate, you’ve probably noticed that almost all the properties are being called “luxury” – most of the new ones, at least. (No one’s gone so far to call that fixer-upper project “luxury,” or at least let’s hope not!) At first, you probably got excited about finding “luxury” for only $150,000 USD, and then, after realizing that they’re all being called “luxury,” you’re now left thinking, “They just say that about everything.”

While there is definitely a factor of exaggeration on the marketing side of things, a more careful look at what you’re actually getting in a real estate purchase here in Playa del Carmen shows that there is something like “luxury” about it, even when you’re buying a fairly modest condo, for example.

Let’s just assume you’re buying a modest condo for an excellent price; it’s nice, clean, in good shape, decent layout and comfortable, but let’s be honest, it’s not the million-dollar home that most people would ...
... call luxury. Everyone knows that in real estate, location is the key factor, both in pricing and in lifestyle. What does the location of this modest condo offer?

1. You can walk everywhere. The weather is warm all year, so you can really enjoy this lifestyle all the time. This means you can walk to:

The beach – The beaches in Playa del Carmen are some of the most beautiful in the world. They are wide, the sand is soft and the water is turquoise. For this reason, some people like to talk about “paradise” rather than “luxury,” but there’s no reason to take other people’s word for it; you’ll see for yourself when you get here. Fifth Avenue – This main downtown street is a picturesque pedestrian walkway with cafés, galleries, international restaurants, craft shops, bars and much more. Walmart – Walmart and a few similar supermarkets are within a short walk of each other, and from the main downtown residential areas. A local fruit and vegetable market, café, bakery, etc. – Some people have described downtown Playa del Carmen as being somewhat “European.” Whether they are European or traditional Mexican, they offer you food that is tasty, convenient and even healthy. (Well, except the bakeries …) 2. In other locations you can enjoy a gated community lifestyle, offering you access to:

Bike Trails – From most of the gated communities, you won’t be walking everywhere, but you could most certainly bike everywhere. Year-round warm weather combined with shaded streets make this possible much more than just for a couple of summer months. Green areas – Besides being visually pleasant, along with the trees along the roads, they make the air fresher. Golf courses – Playa del Carmen has been named Latin America’s golf capital. Several gated communities offer the convenience of walking distance to a professional-designed course. 3. Modern services abound and are growing. In addition to the international stores mentioned above, modern services you will find in Playa del Carmen include:

Hospitals – In addition to a number of very modern, clean specialized clinics, there is one internationally owned state-of-the-art hospital with a second on the way. Prices are surprisingly low. Malls – Playa del Carmen has 2 new malls that real estate buyers can enjoy. These malls have a variety of stores (department, jewellery, books, shoes, appliances, furniture, etc.) and food. Movie theaters, bowling alleys, etc. – A growing number of day-to-day entertainment options have been appearing. The movies theaters are new with large screens, etc. While the property itself doesn’t fall into the “luxury” category, considering these factors, if you buy Playa del Carmen real estate, you can enjoy a kind of “luxury” lifestyle on a day to day basis. The nice thing is that the properties and basic expenses are so low, that you can actually afford the little extras more often!
