In order to achieve a lower platform on your scale you may want to use four load cells. Each load cell should be placed at the corner of the scale. Load cells tend to be the most expensive element of most industrial scales. However, the benefits of using a scale designed with four load cells may be substantial. Generally, it does not matter where the load is placed on the scale platform. The load will still be shared between the four load cells. The total weight value is determined by signals that come from each of the cells. Since side loads are now minimal, the load cells can be smaller. This can create a lower profile.

Using a good material to fabricate the load cell can also reduce scale height. Aluminum is a popular material to use for this purpose. Aluminum typically isn't an expensive material and it can be easily constructed into a desired shape. However stainless steel is greater quality and if a load cell fabricated with stainless steel it tends to be smaller and more rugged.
