Many people suffer from the painful malady of skin boils. This is a common skin condition that can develop due to many causes including blood impurities, poor immunity, and improper skin hygiene. Some say a diet high in saturated fats can lead to cysts and boils. Boils can occur in different parts of the body and often appear as painful, reddish growths of different sizes. Smaller boils usually subside within a few days after adopting simple treatments. Larger boils may require the medical attention from a healthcare provider.

By treating a boil early on it avoids possible later complications. One helpful home method is the application of heat to the area. This is usually accomplished with hot packs or hot soaks. The heat application works by increasing the blood circulation to the affected area. In this way the body’s antibodies are better able to fight off the infection in the area.

When the boil is firm and small, draining it is not helpful generally. Once a head forms or the boil becomes soft it is ready to be drained. Draining the boil produces a dramatic relief of pain. It is amazing how something so small ...
... can be so painful. Typically small boils will drain by themselves with the use of hot soaks, but occasionally medical intervention is needed. Sometimes large boils can contain several pus pockets that must be drained and lanced to be opened.

Medical treatment for boils often includes the use of antibiotics to eliminate the threat of any bacterial infection. This is true especially if an infection develops on the surrounding area of the skin. Antibiotics may not be needed in all cases. Also, often a boil will not heal unless there is drainage through surgical means.

The best treatments for boils are prevention. This can be accomplished by keeping your skin clean and eating a healthy diet. It is important to practice personal hygiene by keeping the skin clean and washing regularly with clean water and mild soaps. This prevents the accumulation of bacteria near the skin and hair follicles. Also, if you have any cuts or wounds it is vital to treat them properly and keep them clean because this can attract bacteria. In addition, boils can be contagious so do not share your clothing, towels, or linens with an infected person.
