Crime In Los Angeles
Crime is a major problem faced by all the countries of the world. No one can stand up and announce that they have finally achieved a crime free environment, the only difference is that some places has low crime rates as compared to the others, so they can boast on this fact, but the bottom line is that crime is present everywhere and it can’t be eliminated totally. Same is the case with Los Angeles. Even though now the city is experiencing comparatively low crime rates as compared to before, still the rate is way too high as compared to the other cities present in US and along with that, LA also has a long history of violent crimes.
The earliest recorded crime history starts in the 1965, when the Watts Riots broke out throughout the city, leading to $35million loss in damages alone. The numbers of people injured in this riot were 1,032 while the numbers of people arrested were nearly 4000. In this riot 34 people were killed which included the government employees, police officers and civilians. The cause of the riot was the arrest of the mob leader over erratic driving, still the situation got out of hand and the riot ...
... started. LA saw another riot later on after some years and this riot was named as the hippie riots.
The worst phase in LA came during the years the years 1984 to 1990 when crack epidemic took place. This period was marked as the most violent period of the city. With the increase in the use of crack, the number of violent crimes also increased and by 1985 crack was available in some of the major cities of America. Along with all these things another problem also came forward, that is, during this time period previously unknown gangs and many new gangs started getting power and most of the time the situation got out of hand. During this time the police department was always raiding one gang after another in hope of bringing peace to the city. Once the crack epidemic came to end, the city experienced peace for two years before the riots broke out again between the backs and the white locals in 1992 and a total of 52 people died in the riots.
From 1993 onwards nothing major happened for some years and the peace was restored to some extent, however, the peace was not long lived and in 1997 North Hollywood Shootout took place between the two largest, well equipped and well armored bank robbers and the SWAT. The lead robbers from both the groups were killed during the operation and finally the police was able to arrest the rest of the team. However, after this incident there was a decrease in the number of the violent crimes, however, the number of gangs continued to rise, with Mafia being one of the most notorious one. Today the crime is rate in LA is much lower than it used to be in the past and this period is considered as one of the most peaceful period of the city, still when the crime rate high when it is compared with the average crime rate.
