The liquid crystal display (LCD monitor or LCD) is the main component of flat panel displays. It is mainly used since the late 1990s black and white and in color since the beginning of 2000 in mobile phones, personal computers, televisions, on-board computers for aircraft and cars. Its main advantage is its low power consumption.

It uses the polarization of light polarizing filters and the birefringence of some nematic liquid Crystal phase, which can be varied depending on the orientation of the electric field. From the optical point of view, the LCD is a passive device: it does not emit light, transparency varies, and it must be informed.

First available in monochrome and small, it is used in calculators and watches because of its low power consumption and allows current to display in color in sizes exceeding one meter diagonal. He replaced the cathode ray tube in most applications, except in high definition when the color palette should be accurate and true, and in harsh environments (as in temperatures below 5 ° C).

Depending on the relative transparency of the liquid crystal devices: 15% for monochrome ...
... displays, and less than 5% for color displays, due to the interposition of the mask color, multiple lighting modes have been adapted:

Light transmission: the screen works with a backlight (TV, computer monitor, camera and video camera) or by a discharge lamp cold cathode, light is divided by two orthogonal prisms networks.

The main features are:

Brightness of the screen is not sufficient in sunlight. The power consumption of the light source is two to three times less than a tube cathode1, 10 to 40 W depending on the lighting, for a screen 48 cm (19 inches), and less than 1 W standby.
The lifetime of lamps: 2.4 times more than a CRT, with 60 000 hours1 or 33 years if the screen is on five hours a day.OLED (Organic light-emitting diode) include organic light emitting diodes.

The first OLED (or LED) is already on sale, but it is very small, expensive, and offers a low setting. These screens are very promising, but for now, marketing is not realistic, because on the one hand, their prices too high, and secondly, the current limitations of technology: the largest OLED has in fact only 66 cm (26 inch) diagonal, what is too little, because most have sold TVLCD 81 cm (32 inches) or more.
