More Benefits Of Sleeping Early

There are a ton of other great benefits. Now, let me first say that if you are a night owl, and that works for you, I think that’s great. There’s no reason to change, especially if you’re happy with it. But for me, switching from being a night owl to an early riser (and yes, it is possible) has been a godsend. It has helped me in so many ways that I’d never go back. Here are just a few:
Exercise
Keep physically active during the day. This is especially important the day after a bad night’s sleep. When you sleep less, you should be more active during the day. Being less active is one of the worst things an insomniac can do.
Strenuous exercise (brisk walking, swimming, jogging, squash, etc.) in late afternoon seems to promote more restful sleep. Also, insomniacs tend to be too inactive a couple of hours before bed. Do some gentle exercise? A stretching routine has helped many people.
Go outside I've found that going outside and reading or exercising first thing in the morning is great for waking up. Feeling the breeze and sunlight on your skin, hearing the sounds of morning, all these things ...
... together stimulate just about every sense in your body.
Change alarm sounds often. Don't let your body get used to hearing the same alarm every day. Drudgery never motivates, my friends. Use alarms that are pleasant, and change them often so they stay pleasant. There's nothing worse than waking up to something that sounds like a horn on a Chevy.
Sleep isn't just a form of rest! Sleep plays a critical physiological function, and is indispensable for your intellectual development! Those who do not respect their sleep are not likely to live to their full mental potential!
Yet modern society has developed well-entrenched rules that keep sleep in utmost disregard. This has been driven to pathological levels in American society. Here are some bad rules that hurt sleep:
It is ok to use alarm clock to cut sleep short
It is ok to work in shifts
It is ok to travel people around the world without much notice of the jet lag problem
It is ok to save time by sleeping less and working more
It is ok to pull kids out of bed in time for school
It is ok to skip nights before important exams, etc.
The difficult part is getting to bed early enough in order to enable me to rise early. It is just that when the kids are in bed, it is so nice to relax and watch a little tube or surf the net. Here are some motivations for the “early to bed” part:
Save electricity: think about how much less electricity you might save if you headed for bed at 10:30 pm rather than 11:30 pm? You could turn off all lights, the television, the computer and everything else.
Save heat: We always turn our heat down two or three degrees at night. Get under those covers and give your furnace a rest.
Quality time: Mrs. Stew and I interact more when the television and computers are off and we are just lying in the dark. Lots of good conversation and sometimes a little “conversation”.
