Some Tips On Being A Good Parent
A good parent is hard to quantify or qualify. If you are lucky enough, your parents might be your basis for good parenting. Becoming a parent is hard especially without any basis for becoming a good one. Let's be honest, the conditioning of our parents can contribute to the way we handle our kids in the long run. Nonetheless, your goal is to be a good and capable parent.
Proactive parenting
In becoming a good parent, you have to understand that both parents will have to exert an effort in rearing the child. The lack of participation from the other one could lead to emotional gap even if the other parent gives the child security that both parents love him or her. This is a common problem for parents that work in another country. It is important to have open lines of communication to make sure that the child can have the emotional security that the parents are there for them. The internet is a very powerful tool that you can use to communicate and to be seen it helps the kids to some extent.
Do what you preach
If you tell them that saying bad words is not proper, then you have to make sure that you control ...
... what you say whenever they are present. Practicing what you preach is an important thing for parents because it limits the confusion for the kids. Keep in mind that what you do has more impact to your kids than what you say. Walking the talk may be hard especially if you have mannerisms and expressions that seem to be fine if you are around with adults but will not be appropriate when you have children. Remember, they are like sponges. They can absorb information so be sure that you and the other people around the home are aware of your rules of what to do and what not to do.
Keeping it fun for both
In being a good parent, it does not have to be serious and driven by paranoia. You have to let the kids play, and sometimes, they have to fall and cry in order to learn things. Pampering them or securing them too much, shunning them away from social interaction can be detrimental. Go to birthday parties when invited. Go to the park and playground. Do some hobbies and develop a bond that will give your child a sense of emotional security that you are not just strict and unreasonable parents.
You are not a friend
Some parents like to do the friend game with their children. They call each other in a first name basis or talk to them as if they are on the same level. Especially for those pre-teens and teenage kids, it is important that you put boundaries where respect lies. You want your kids to accept you and be able to help them in time of need but you also want to feel that they are will respect the parent kid relationship before anything else. It is your goal to make them feel comfortable but if things go too far, they might not be able to tell the difference between parents and mere friends.
