Pearls are one of the most beautiful and fascinating gifts of nature to the human race. These are hexagonal aragonite crystals made from calcium carbonate that originate in Mussels, Clams and Oysters. Pearls are found in many parts of the world. Usually white or creamy with a slight tinge of pink shade, pearls can also be found in colors like green, blue, yellow, black and brown.

Pearls are considered to be one of the most highly priced and valuable jewelry accessories in the world. However, amongst the expensive qualities of pearls the costliest and rarest of them all are the black pearls. Black pearls are very rare and are, thus, not easily available in the market.

Pearls are usually categorized into two forms namely natural and cultured. While natural pearls take form in natural circumstances in the water, the cultured pearls are artificially cultivated in Pearl farms. Natural pearls usually take shape in two kinds of water resources such as the sea bed and inland water bodies. The pearls originated in the sea bed are commonly known as saltwater ...
... pearls while the ones harvested from the inland water bodies are regarded as the Cultured Freshwater pearls.

There are many different kinds of pearls known for their respective features and qualities. Here are some of the most popular and widely acclaimed varieties of pearls available in the market.

Freshwater Pearls: Freshwater pearls take form in mussels living in ponds and rivers. These pearls are mostly found in North America, Japan, China and some parts of Europe. The quality of Freshwater pearls is mostly compared to that of the gemstones. These pearls are usually white in color, however, at some places these can also be found in colors like orange, purple, yellow and pink.

Akoya Pearls: Also known as the Pinctada Fucata or the Akoya Oyster, these beautiful pearls are found in Japan. The Akoyas fall in the category of saltwater pearls that form in the smallest Akoya oysters of all. However, the most commonly originating Akoyas are creamy white in color with a tinge of green or pink shade, but, sometimes they can also be found in colors like blue, silver, pink and yellow. These pearls are fairly round and semi baroque in shape.

South Sea Pearls: These pearls are mostly found in Australia near the Indian Ocean. The size of the pearl may vary from 5 to 20 mm. These pearls are highly lustrous with a satin smooth touch.
