Miscarriage, also known as spontaneous abortion, may be defined as the unexpected end of pregnancy preceding the viability period (24 weeks). The viability period consists of three trimesters. A pregnant woman is at the risk of miscarriage until the first two trimesters end. During the third trimester, chances of miscarriage are very low. Miscarriage is a common problem faced by one in four women in pregnancy period.

Miscarriage can be quite shocking to a woman who has woven a tapestry out of the dreams related to her unborn baby. However in most cases, miscarriage is common in unrecognized pregnancy. Miscarriage may be threatened, inevitable, incomplete and complete. In case of threatened miscarriage, the womb and fallopian tubes are tender. There is mild vaginal bleeding and the cervicalos or mouth of womb is closed.

Also there is no passage of any womb tissues. In case of inevitable miscarriage, the mouth of womb opens up and there is much vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping. In case of incomplete miscarriage, there is heavy bleeding, the mouth of womb is dilated and only a part of the contents of womb ...
... is expelled. In case of complete miscarriage, total expulsion of the products of conception takes place. The fetus along with placental tissues is thrown out to make the womb empty.

Thus dislodging of the fetus and placenta from uterine wall leads to miscarriage. Vaginal bleeding or spotting and abdominal cramps are the primary symptoms of miscarriage. The other symptoms could be weakness, dizziness, pain while urinating, breast tenderness, inability to control urine and frequent urge for urinating. The causes of miscarriage may be listed as follows:

1. Weakness of cervix
2. Low lying placenta
3. Increased level of water
4. Immune system disorders
5. Infections like listeria, herpes simplex etc.
6. Collagen vascular diseases like lupus etc.
7. Hormonal imbalance
8. Structural abnormalities like fibroid tumors, benign growth of muscle cells in uterus, poor muscle tone in the womb etc.
9. Chromosomal defects
10. Abnormality of fetus
11. Illnesses like diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure.
12. Surgical procedure in uterus like amniocentesis etc.
13. Stress
14. Caffeine intake
15. Alcohol intake
16. Smoking
17. Use of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs around embryo implantation period.
