Becoming a nurse is an excellent career choice for people who are interested in health care. Nurses work in a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes, convalescent centers, public health centers, clinics and private homes. They mainly work with sick or injured patients, but they also work with patients seeking routine care. The responsibilities of nurses vary, but their basic duties include taking and recording patient's vital signs, collecting samples for analysis, administering medication, and assisting doctors during examinations.

What Does Nursing School Involve?

Students need to complete a program in a certified nursing school to become a nurse. Nursing programs typically take about a year for students to complete, and they include both intensive classroom instruction and hands-on training, as well. Areas of study will include physiology, human anatomy, pediatrics, obstetrics, surgical nursing, nutrition, first-aid, and pharmacology. Students must be thoroughly dedicated to their studies to perform well in their programs.

All nurses must be licensed and the requirements for licensing vary by state. However, in most cases, students can complete the National Council Licensure Exam to obtain their licenses. This is an examination done on the computer that covers such topics as health promotion and maintenance, safe and effective care environments, and physiological integrity.

The training involved in a nursing program can be extremely intense. There are many traits that make for an outstanding nursing student; however, there are two basic traits that all students positively must have. People must be dedicated and have a love for people to excel in any nursing school.
