Proper Maintenance Will Keep A Cpap Machine Functioning For A Long Time
Keeping a CPAP machine and its mask properly maintained is not a difficult task. All machines have detailed instructions covering the proper methods for maintenance. The end goal is to keep everything clean. However, this does not mean that the unit must be sterile. It is impractical for an average person in a typical home to keep the mask and machine completely sterile. However, regular cleaning and maintenance will keep the machine working well for many years.
Maintaining the Machine
Thankfully a CPAP machine does not require much actual maintenance by the user. Wiping down the outside surface to keep it free of dirt and dust is recommended on a weekly basis. Since the outside is usually made of plastic it is advised to never use any bleach based product for cleaning. Also, do not put the machine in water since it is electric. Most importantly, the air filter should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions. All CPAP machines contain an air filter made from foam or paper that will need to be replaced. These filters are necessary to catch small ...
... particles like dust, pollen and animal dander before reaching the CPAP mask. The foam filter is washable and can be cleaned multiple times before needing replacement. The paper filter needs to be replaced when dirty or every 1-2 months. Different parts of the country have varying levels of dust and pollen in the air. Therefore it is a good idea to check the filters every week to make sure they are clean and working properly.
The Humidifier
For people who are using a CPAP machine with a humidifier, this is the place on the machine that will be the most susceptible to mold, mildew or other microbes. All manufacturers recommend distilled water for the water chamber. It is important to rinse out the chamber daily with hot, mild soapy water. In addition, soaking the chamber in a mix of equal parts water and vinegar will help clean and disinfect it. It is not advisable to use tap water since it may contain some type of contaminant.
Hoses and Other Plastic Parts
Generally, the CPAP tubing will not develop any type of bacteria growth. However, it is a good idea to rinse the CPAP tube with hot, mild soapy water as well. This should be done after a night’s sleep to give the tubes time to dry.
The Mask
It is very important to keep the CPAP mask as clean as possible. There are many varieties of CPAP masks that will work with any CPAP machines, it is not uncommon for people to try out three or more masks before finding one that is relatively comfortable and fits them well. Also, CPAP users typically have a few different CPAP masks at the ready to switch to in case of breakage or sore spots.
The best method for cleaning the CPAP mask will involve the use of mild, non-scented soap. It is best to remove any removable parts such as the cushion or headgear prior to washing. Combine a small amount of soap in some hot water and let the mask and cushion soak for a few minutes. The headgear can be washed normally. It is important to rinse all soap from the mask so it will not irritate the skin. Let the mask dry thoroughly prior to re-attaching the cushion and headgear. Ideally, the cleaning should happen on a daily basis. Because schedules are busy, it should be a weekly occurrence at a minimum. There are CPAP wipes and other cleaning products which help maintain the cleaning regiment.
Keeping a regular maintenance schedule for the CPAP machine, CPAP mask and associated parts will maintain the products integrity and ensure many nights of peaceful and comfortable sleep.
