When the world was young, there was no such thing as a fixed retail price. Everyone was prepared to haggle and bargain to get the best deal. Indeed, anyone who failed to negotiate was considered the village idiot who deserved to lose all his hard-earned money. But as the years have gone by, sellers have managed to change this around. Instead of customers making their offers to buy at the lowest possible prices, the shopkeepers now offer to sell at a fixed price. In a sense, this has come with the loss of a sense of community. When towns and villages are small, everyone knows everyone else. So when sellers are negotiating they usually know the financial status of each potential buyer and can pitch the prices at a level known to be affordable. Indeed, this was traditionally the basis of credit with sellers prepared to wait until payday to collect what was due. Now, everyone is anonymous, walking avatars of real human beings. No one knows you or cares what you can afford. You either pay or you get nothing.

Except, of course, there can be ways in which you qualify for discounts when looking for insurance. The first price ...
... quoted to you is the headline rate for people in your general situation. But it's possible you can qualify for reductions. It depends on your individual circumstances. This reflects the more theoretical nature of insurance which is supposed to be based on a more direct assessment of the risks you run. So, for example, people who drive a limited number of miles every week at off-peak times are less likely to be involved in accidents. This contrasts sharply with those who have quite long commuting journeys through heavy traffic. The more miles you drive at peak hours, the greater the risk of an accident. Similarly, some people live in ZIP code areas which have a high rate of vehicle theft and vandalism. But, if you have a lock-up garage in which to store your vehicle off the road when not in use, this reduces the risk and qualifies you for a discount.

Why should insurers offer discounts? Actually, it's good business sense. Every business wants to keep its customers loyal and, if discounts and other offers help achieve this, the profits are stable. So, in a sense, competitors play a game against each other. Some will offer welcome discounts to new policyholders, encouraging them to make their first buy or transfer their business. Faced with these offers, the other insurers offer annual reductions to encourage their existing policyholders to stay. How generous these discounts will be decided by the level of competition in your state. If there are not so many companies and they have informally agreed not to compete too hard, the discounts will be relatively small. But if the price competition is real, it can be worth seeking out the discounts. The savings can be significant.

So start with the auto insurance quotes you get through this site and then work through all the combinations that can bring reductions. Unless you explore the options you are never going to find the lowest auto insurance rates. Don't be like the village idiot of old and accept the first price demanded of you.
