Dana Classics – Tabu: An Affair Of The Senses
So few fragrances can fair to be described as emotive, particularly when many modern endorsed scents are a heady cocktail of fruity notes that simply just don't 'fit' There is no careful layering to the base and heart notes, no longevity or sillage to the scent, and what you're wearing might well be a body spray that doesn't even enhance the natural pheromones your body gives off. There are a plenitude of such fragrances on the market. Many with an undeservedly high price tag which belies a quality that simply doesn't exist.
For lovers of the pre-couture fragrance phase (that's pre-1980); the market is now a veritable minefield of scents that are neither individual, nor defining. The scarcity of bold, brash Orientals has made way for a new wave of floaty, ethereal scents that even wall-flower women find far too subdued. So, where do you look for a perfume with as much personality and vitality as the modern 'ladette', yet would also be fitting of a glamorous seductress? The answer lies in the grand old year of 1932, when the House of Dana released a time-defying fragrance that embodied both the sensuality, ...
... and strength of woman – Dana Classics Tabu.
First Encounters
There is no denying that Dana's Tabu is a heady fragrance; the quirky blend of orange blossom mingled with the sweet tang of benzoin, influences a fruit-like discern - even before the first mist is emitted. Yet far from the incongruous waft that many retrograde perfumes have become known for, it is almost as if Tabu emits one note at a time – from the citrus burst that instantly awakens the palate, to a subtler, sweeter floral, then punctured by a spicy undertone of patchouli and sandalwood. And if you've ever smelled either, you'll know that both are gradually emittent, rather than full on, 'in-your-face' notes.
An Underlying Warmth
Secondary to Tabu's widespread appeal has to be the warm 'flavor' of its nature. Often described as connoting the same aromas one would associate with the festive season, Tabu has a striking spicy musk which opens up a realm of darkness, intrigue and mystery to the senses. Sandalwood is often used as a basal “fixative” within fragrances to slow the rate at which it evaporates. It is also inherently woody and aromatic, used for rich incense and to create atmosphere. In contrast to other 'woody' notes, such as agar used in essential oils; Sandalwood is fresher and greener, making it a prime coupling for lively citrus and bergamot. By comparison, oakmoss is decidedly sweeter, balancing out the strong spice tones and acting as an excellent base tone for floral infusions – in this case jasmine and oriental rose.
From Day To Night
A lacking characteristic of many modern perfumes is its ability to transform, evolve and remain for the entirety of the day. Most modern women prefer a fragrance that doesn't require repeat application every few hours, and this is where the House of Dana's Tabu comes into its own. Borne from the hands of the great fragrance chef Jean Carles; Tabu is one of those few fragrances that really works with a woman's skin. By day those zingy citrus elements act as a live-wire allure, lifting heads as a woman walks past and leaving a floral sweetness in her wake. By night, the husky base tones tempt an altogether different kind of attention; closeness, sensuality and mystery that beckons suitors closer. There's no denying that Tabu is a romantic fragrance, with a bi-polar personality to suit any time of day!
