For those with an interest in learning to play a musical instrument the best place to start is with the basics. In the case of a guitar the basics begins with the guitar scale. The scale differs depending on the type of music you would like to play. With this in mind start with the scales appropriate to the type of music that you personally want to play. If you start attempting to learn multiple types you could take the chance that you would get frustrated way too early in the game. That is why 99% of the people who start learning to play the guitar end up quitting before they have a chance to even get started.
A guitar scale is a group of notes with specific intervals. They begin with a root note and end one octave higher than that same note. It's the interval pattern that determines the style and mood of the music. Music that is upbeat and happy is called the Ionian mode, sad music is the Aeolian mode and the sinister style is the Locrian mode. The most common of the scales themselves are minor and major pentatonic, blues scales, and diatonic major. Even with the endless amounts of types and styles there is ...
... a relatively small number of scales required to play most types of music.
If Western music is your choice then learning the guitar scale for the seven modes of the major scale is what you'll want to understand. It is also the best way to advance your skills from the basics of being comfortable with the different patterns up to creating some of your own sounds. Learning the seven modes of the major scale is relatively easy because they all start with a specific note from the major scale. As an example; the Ionian mode note intervals are W-W-H-W-W-W-H. The W represents two semitones and the H stands for one. The Ionian mode is most commonly used in rock, country, and jazz music.
It's a good idea to practice your guitar scale in all the keys. The scales each have a keynote and part of your progress will be learning to recognize that keynote. The keynote is the same as the name of the scale you are playing. If you are practicing an "A" minor pentatonic scale then the "A" note is the star. Make sure not to get in a hurry, practice slowly at first and then your speed will pick up as you progress. In fact, the speed will come naturally as a by-product of all your hard work.
