Over the last few years I've found that I'm using Skype more and more often to keep in touch with people. I use it to call my Mom back home, to call my friends, and most of all for business calls, especially because I am working from home a lot. The truth is that the once futuristic "videophone" seems to have crept into my life without ever actually appearing on my phone! Truth to tell, I love Skype. It's easy to install, even my Mom can use it, and for anyone with a broadband connection it can cut phone bills by at least half. In my case a bigger benefit is the fact that a face-to-face business conference - even if the people are thousands of miles apart - is more effective than ten voice calls. Plus it can be pretty funny when my friend who lives in a time zone eight hours ahead of me calls after she's been out on the town all night! However, I did have one major bugbear with Skype, and that was the lack of recording skype calls capacity. I may not need to record calls with my Mom or my tipsy friend, but I certainly do need a recording of an important video conference, and voice conferences too. So I did a bit of searching ...
... around and I found that two programs seem to lead the market. For Macs, Ecamm is the recorder of choice, and for PCs I found that the top dog is Supertintin. As a PC user, I plumped for Supertintin, and downloaded it from their site. For a non-techie like me, the setup is mercifully easy. The program is free to download and try, but has a five-minute maximum on recording length until you pony up your $29.95 for the license.
The user interface might qualify as the easiest ever! A red button with a play arrow on it to start skype recorder, and then a pause button if you need to take a break. There's lots of options - record your end, their end, or both, and if you record both, you can have them in separate or combined files. The bit I found most impressive is that you can actually have a three (or more!) people together in a conference video call and record all the people in the same picture, side-by-side, in a single file! Pretty cool. And very easy, which is important for me!
My main worry is that it would slow down my Skype and cause the picture or sound to break up. But it didn't, because apparently it only does the skype record once the sound and picture is already received. I made a few test calls to friends, tried out the three-way conference record skype calls thing and it worked like a dream. So what more can I say - I'm sold. If you are looking for a Skype recorder, my advice would be to look no further than Supertintin.
