Credit Cards Australia – What You Need To Know
There are 36 authorized issuers of Aussie credit cards. That makes for a lot of choice and, quite possibly, a lot of confusion when you are trying to choose the right one for you. It pays to know a bit about what you should be on the lookout for.
What you will want to be checking on your Aussie credit cards will mainly depend on what your spending and banking habits are. This involves a few questions with yourself and honest answers! Are you planning on using your card every day – for groceries and petrol station expenses – or just for major online purchases? Will you pay back the whole debt every month or just make the minimum payment? How good are you with sticking to budgets and spending guidelines? Will you be maxing out your card all the time? These types of questions can be hard to answer but knowing your spending patterns and how well you manage your finances is critical to using a credit card responsibly and selecting one that suits your lifestyle.
If you run a "tight ship" financially, are very organized with making repayments and paying bills and always check bank statements every month, you may want ...
... a card that has a long interest-free period so that you pay back the debt each month without incurring any interest. You can even use the card for as many purchases as you like per month if you are responsible like this – a high APR won't even matter because it will never be activated! Just choose one of the Australian credit cards that have a 55-day interest free period, or similar. You may even find a card with a low annual fee as well – but usually if you get two of the features you want you may have to sacrifice others – but, like I said, a high APR won’t matter and a high cash advance rate, for instance, probably won’t matter if you are a good monthly budgeter.
Australian credit cards providers will sometimes ask you if you want to raise your credit limit once you have been a customer with them for a while. This can be useful if you are planning on using your card more frequently but beware of the extra temptation to spend that this will provide. If you don’t need it, and can’t afford it, then don’t accept the rise in limit. Decline it.
