Oxford Style of Writing an Essay
Oxford format is usually referred to as documentary note system and often used in United States of America. The format majorly uses a three occurrence format similar to turabian format. When using oxford, a citation appers in the body, a footnote appears in the bottom of each page where a citation has occurred, and a bibliography is essential to list all the cited work, afterwards is the author’s names which are usually in initials, and without periods, then followed by author’s last name. The title of the book follows with the first words in capitals, then the name of the publisher, the city of publication, page numbers separated by commas.
In documentary note style citations in the body of the paper using superscripts numbers are raised at the end of sentence and a bibliography if required should be provided at the end of the paper giving details of each source referred and all other material consulted and as explained above, oxford format basically contains three major parts which are, citing sources, footnotes and end notes, and the bibliography.
In citing sources, ...
... superscript numbers with corresponding footnotes should be used whenever information or ideas from sources are discussed. Sources such as books, journals, reports, newspapers, interviews, radio, television and information from the Internet must be acknowledged in text and detailed in footnotes. Information from other study guides and readers must also be referenced. Superscript numbers are generally placed at the end of a sentence or clause rather than immediately after the words to which they refer. However, where possible, they should be placed immediately after direct quotes in a similar understanding, summarizing and paraphrasing are essential elements where Summarizing is condensing a text and paraphrasing is conveying all the information in a short stretch of text and superscript numbers should be used apppriately.incase the writer is quoting, the quote should be less than 30 words and in the event of a quote of more than 30 words the writer should omit the quotation mark and begin in anew line and indent the quote about 1 cm from the left-hand margin of the page.
The second part involves the use of footnotes and end notes where in the oxford format, it is required that at the bottom of the page you would have a short line separating the body of the text from the footnotes relating to the superscript numbers. The first time a source is cited, the footnote must provide full bibliographic details. The footnotes for subsequent references to the same source do not repeat all the details again but use a shortened form and it should be noted that In assignments footnotes should be listed consecutively and not in a table format. whereas the third and most important is in writing or collating bibliography, a bibliography consists of sources mentioned or cited in the text, the sources consulted in preparing appear as well as other sources thought wise for use by the reader, and in referencing in the documentary note system, the order of element which involves use of capital letters and punctuation marks are the same as footnotes but the family name of the author should proceed before the initials and all the entries are arranged alphabetically according to the family names of authors and strictly nonumbering used.
