Strategic Management In A Company Or An Institution
Strategic Management in a company or an institution
Introduction
The strategic management can be said to be a way the company or an institution implements, changes and evaluate its strategies and decisions in order to achieve its long term objectives. It’s regarded as a process of defining an organization missions, vision as well as objectives and development of plans and organization policies. This is also a way of allocating resources that will aid in achieving the set business objectives.
Corporate strategies
There are three movements that do affect organization that include: (1) corporate downsizing (2) outsourcing (3) re-engineering. These movements have different effects to the company, competitors and customers as well.
• Corporate downsizing is reduction or elimination of workers and some positions in order to reduce the cost of doing business. This cost the company a hefty one charge that takes time to recover and also affects the company’s production line due to reduction of workforce. This also gives the competitors an opportunity to absorb the lost talents who would in turn ...
... reveal the company’s secretes and therefore are taken over by the competitor. Some customers may be willing to be served by some employees and through layoff, they might loose trust will the company. Some customers follow those they believe serve them best to any company they move to.
• Outsourcing- outsourcing is concentration of a given core competency and giving other companies to work on other competencies. Outsourcing has affected the company, competitors and customers as well. When a company decides to outsource any given task, the company will therefore need to eliminate those who have been working on the already outsourced jobs. The level of competency varies as the job might not meet the aspired grade thus the company may therefore loose customers and an opportunity to the competitors to acquire the unsatisfied customers.
• Job reengineering have been causing problems to many companies as some people are taken to areas that they are not competent thus giving a substandard quality. In turn the company suffers as it looses customers to the competitors. The company also gets demotivated workforce that again affects the production line.
In addressing this problem, IT has played a vital role in managing and tracking the progress of any given task. Through software, the company is able to track the progress of the outsourced job and also in managing the employees. With IT support, the company is able to do more and effective than when doing manually, example, through the use of quickbooks program, the company is able to manage and do its accounts better. As a strategic manager, handling these issues requires employee involvement in order to understand exact reason for such decisions. In most cases, an employee will think that this systems are being implemented to replace them, but as a manager is my responsibility to ensure they really understand that they are for their advantage to ease their work and increase their production (Wheelen & David, 2008).
Organization culture
Leadership style can be said to be an approach and the way of providing directions, plan implementations and motivating employees. In our company, participative mode of leadership is a common style of leadership. Through this style of management, the company and employees are able to face and work together in solving different problems and issues that arise in the company. This on the other hand helps in strengthening the communication between the employees and the management. The employees feel as part of the company is motivated to working an extra mile in achieving the company’s organizational goals.
To motivate the employees, the company involves other employees in selecting the best performing employee to be rewarded after a given period. This makes the employees strengthen their relationship and work as team in order to have more votes during the rewarding time (Wheelen & David, 2008).
Participative management
Test of Functional strategies
The company has implemented the strategies that will be easily achieved. This is to help the company work together with the organizational culture so as to avoid variation of the results achieved. Though having set strategies, the company is able to make all employees regardless of their experience and expertise work in line with the set goals and achieve the aspired organizational goals (Johnson et al, 2008).
Organizational Structure
To enable everyone in the company feel as part and contributor to the goal achievement, the company makes everyone feel as if they are on one level. This has helped the employees face their managers, air their ideas, grievances and suggestions without any fear. On the other hand, the strategy has helped in establishing strong participative strategy (Castells, 1996).
The policies in the company are well implemented and are working good; there is probability that all targeted goals might be achieved well before set time. The most apparent critical success factor (CSF) for our company is employees’ involvement in the goal achievement. This is because once the employees understand what is needed from them; they will actually work better and produce the required grade of their work (Castells, 1996).
