Oscola Style Of Writing
Oscola Style of Writing
OSCOLA refers to oxford standard for citation of legal authorities. It is a citation style needed to facilitate citations of authorities more especially in referencing. This citation style is commonly used in UK and schools of law for citations of most forms of legal documents. Although OSCOLA has some common elements with other referencing systems such as footnotes and bibliography, it has its own unique features. In OSCOLA, sparse punctuations are essential when writing about law.
When citing books in OSCOLA, absence of punctuation should be demonstrated, an aspect that illustrates how unique the style is like. In OSCOLA, the names of the author precedes with surname then followed by a comma. The title of the book should be in italics. Parenthesis is used to cite edition, publisher, and the date of publication. In OSCOLA, the footnotes should always be sequential and should be cited in the similar way as in in the bibliography, then afterwards they can should be abbreviated. According to OSCOLA referencing guide, little punctuations should be used and no full stops
after abbreviations ...
... which should be used. It should be noted that decisions are treated as cases, and in the event that details are taken from official journal of the European Union (OJ) series, then the number, dates and full title must be quoted.
All case names should be cited in italics and in lower case, dates should be in square or round brackets in accordance with the series of the report. Since 2001, natural citations have been introduced so as to recognize the extensive use of electronic law report. It is always very important to recognize different forms of legislative documents such as regulative directives and decisions in citations. In cases of three authors, insert the word and between each name. To identify any particular chapters in a book of edited readings, the word in should be used and the title of the chapter should be put in inverted commas.
Secondary referencing is vital in the OSCOLA citation style, where the original source of information should be intensively read and no footnote from another work should be cited. Never quote any information that you have not read. For secondary referencing, deliberate efforts should be made to see to it that original source of information is used. In the case of journal article, the article in single inverted commas should follow the author of the article. All the newspaper articles should be cited in the same case as the journal article with the title in italic.
