Practical House Cleaning Tips: Bathrooms (1)
The bathroom is probably the worst in the house cleaning chores list. Apart from wanting to have a hygienic bathroom, most of us like to have shiny surfaces as much as possible, and a combination of water, people, and soap does not make for constantly shiny surfaces. I recommend giving a bathroom a top to bottom cleaning about once a week, or at the very least, once a month. If you don’t want to do this yourself, you can easily get in a professional cleaning company on a monthly basis to save you time. They should only need to spend about an hour in each bathroom to get it pristine and sparkling again.
Many house cleaning professionals will not make calls for such a small amount of time, though, so be ready with a list of other chores you would like the cleaning company’s staff to fill up their minimum number of hours. In between times, wiping over surfaces with a lightly damp or dry cloth will usually keep the majority of the surfaces from building up too much of a coating. However, if you prefer to do it yourself, follow my procedure, below, for a full clean and you will have a bright, hygienic bathroom in no time!
First ...
... of all, flick any cobwebs off the ceiling and walls. Now remove shower heads and soak in vinegar for an eco-friendly solution to lime scale. If you have not done this for a while, you may need to leave them soaking for an hour or two. Similarly, treat faucets with vinegar by filling a small plastic pot or empty yogurt carton with vinegar and hanging it underneath the faucet using wire, string, or tape (one or other of these should work for faucets of all shapes and sizes). If you have hard water, or have moved into a home with badly limescaled shower heads and faucets, you may prefer to treat them with a commercial limescale remover to get them properly clean the first time. Once this is done, you can revert to the more eco-friendly vinegar method!
While the shower heads and taps are soaking, have a look at the grout between the tiles, and seals around basins, baths, and shower stalls. If there is evidence of mildew, you can treat mild cases with a mixture of baking soda, lemon juice and a little water. Mix into a paste and scrub into the grout with an old toothbrush or nail brush, and leave for an hour or so. If the grout is badly stained and mildewed, use a professional grout paste and leave overnight if necessary. Either way, scrub off the paste thoroughly with the brush again, shower off or rinse with plenty of water and dry with a towel. Try to avoid using the bath or shower until the grout is properly dry for best results.
Now you are ready to clean the rest of the bathroom. See my other article for tips on how best to go about this.
