If we were taking a look at mobile phone handsets then HTC would be a name that many people regard as the best available. There range encompasses most peoples needs from the entry level level Wildfire S phone to the extremely high specification Sensation handset. The Tablet market however is a different kettle of fish, with many established phone brands competing for market share with their very first or second edition models. The HTC Flyer is HTCs debut in this area so we thought it was only fair to compare this against a tablet that received its fair share of acclaim in the shape of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The huge difference between these two models is size with both covering different ends of the scale. The Flyer is pitched at the more portable end of the market thanks to its 7 inch screen which makes it perfect for slipping into a small handbag or even a very large pocket. This is in contrast to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 which as its names suggests offers a 10.1 inch screen which is generally the largest available until you move into the realms of the laptop market. Undoubtedly this is the more impressive size ...
... but the extra dimensions do make the unit less portable. The extra size on the Samsung means the manufacturers have upped their resolution to 800 x 1280 on the TFT display. Although not as instantly as impressive as the firms AMOLED offerings such as the Galaxy S2 phone the unit still offers superb image clarity with a great depth of colour. The HTC Flyer with its smaller display does not require the same level of resolution so it offers users 600 x 1024. This screen looks equally as impressive as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 but when using a device of this kind you cannot help but feel the small 7 inch display is a touch on the crowded side. Thus despite the extra portability factor, most true tablet consumers will opt for the larger and more user friendly display found on the Samsung.

Despite the small screen that is found on the HTC Flyer the unit packs in a very powerful processor within its frame. The 1.5Ghz processor offers ample speed despite being a single core chip and with minimal strain being placed upon it by the screen this really does enable the device to operate at lightning pace. Partnering this is a hefty 1GB of RAM to enable the Flyer to offer users one of the best overall experiences that can be found on a unit of its kind. Samsung have approached this from a different angle by opting to install a dual core processor but one that is only clocked at 1Ghz. This certainly helps make the Tab 10.1 a fast device however it is worth bearing in mind that Android, the operating system that both of these machines use, is not fully ready for dual core meaning at this moment in time the HTC proves a more viable option. Both of these units prove capable digital still cameras with the Samsung offering a modest 3.5 mega pixel resolution but with a handy flash should you find conditions less than perfect for taking a pictures. On the other hand the HTC Flyer boasts a higher 5 millon pixel snapper but without the bonus of a flash facility.

The HTC Flyer and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 are going to appeal to different consumers thanks to the vast difference in dimensions. Side by side however they are very equally matched units that should prove a great purchase for any potential consumers.

The HTC Flyer is available now and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is coming soon.
