Sony Ericsson smartphones to date have had varying success in the marketplace. Ranges such as the Vivaz failed to live up to the popularity that the older Cybershot and Walkman phones achieved whilst the current Xperia Mini range has established itself as the perfect compact smartphones. The new Xperia X12 Arc is the brands attempt to conquer the large screen market with a high specification and great looking phone. When put up against an established favourite such as the HTC Desire S how does this newcomer perform?

We have already brushed upon the fact that the new Xperia Arc is a gorgeous handset and this is what will draw the attention of many potential consumers. Whereas HTC follow a familiar formula with most of their handset designs the same cannot be said of the Sony Ericsson Xperia range. Each model has a different look and the Arc is arguably the best looking phone that the firm has ever produced. The name of the phone gives you a big clue as to its overall shape with the entire back panel of the phone sporting a gradual curve which not only looks different but also enables the handset to sit very comfortably ...
... in the palm of your hand. When you flip over to the front side of the device then it is an all together different ball game with the phone offering a much more angular design together with a neat metallic trim that gives the phone a touch of class. This mix of curves and angles works well and leaves you with a phone that stands out from most of its competitors whilst still remaining practical. Despite the curve on the back of the phone the Arc manages to measure in at an incredibly slimline 8.7mm which makes it one of the slimmest phones available and nearly 3mm thinner than the Desire S.

If the Sony comes out on top in terms of design then the HTC Desire S gets its own back with regards to performance. Despite both handsets using identical 1Ghz Qualcomm Scorpion processor chips the Desire S couples this with 768MB of RAM memory rather than the 512MB found on the Sony which results in a slightly faster user experience. Operating platforms on the two models are once again identical thanks to the phones being shipped with the very latest version of the Android operating system however the excellent Sense user interface that HTC employs takes some beating and it really does offer unrivalled functionality. Many modern phones are used for a multitude of multi media functions and therefore storage capacity on a handset becomes vitally important. With an internal storage of over 1GB together with a micro SD card capable of accepting cards of sizes up to 32GB the HTC tops the Xperia Arc in this area. Despite offering similar SD card facilities the Sony offers a rather small built in storage of just 320MB.

There is no doubt that both of these handsets are great models, with the Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 Arc likely to attract customers focusing on design elements whereas the HTC Desire S will appeal in terms of functionality and features.

The HTC Desire S and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 Arc are available now.
