Drinking is a common social practice and individuals enjoy sharing a bottle of wine over a meal, going out for drinks with their friends or celebrating a certain event with alcohol. There are numerous signs of alcoholism that can help you realize whether or not you have a drinking problem and it’s important to be aware of the definition of alcoholism if you want to avoid any drinking problems.

First of all, individuals who drink alcohol in order to feel better or to avoid feeling bad should definitely learn more about the most common signs of alcoholism. Unfortunately we live in a society that encourages alcohol drinking and often signs of alcoholism are related to interconnected factors such as genetics, the way you were brought up, your social environment and your emotional health. People with a history of family alcoholism are more at risk than others of becoming alcoholics and in order to prevent this, the first thing ...
... you should do is recognize signs of alcoholism.

Drinking is quite common in many cultures across the globe and the effects caused by alcohol vary from one person to another. For this reason, it is quite difficult to figure out whether or not you have an alcohol problem and some of the first signs of alcoholism is the fact that drinking causes problems in your lives, affecting your relationships with the persons you care about and at the same time your professional status. Therefore, if the following signs of alcoholism sound familiar it is time you recognized you have a drinking problem: you feel guilty or ashamed when you drink, you tend to hide your drinking habits, your family members are worried about your drinking, you feel the need to drink in order to feel better, and you drink more than you planned to.

The simplest definition of alcoholism is that alcoholism is the most severe form of problem drinking and those who have alcohol problems have a physical dependence on alcohol. Denial is part of every definition of alcoholism and most often the desire to drink is so strong that many individuals tend to rationalize their drinking and consider it normal. If you drink more than you used to in order to feel relaxed and if it is getting harder and harder to get drunk it means that you are developing tolerance to alcohol and that you will drink more and more in order to have the sensation you had when you first started drinking.

Another essential major warning sign mentioned in the definition of alcoholism is that drinking to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, shakiness, sweating, nausea, insomnia, depression, fatigue, loss of appetite and headache is a major sign that you have a drinking issue. To conclude, although we all have work, marital and financial stress, blaming others for all your problems and refusing to discuss about your drinking problems are a clear sign that you have adopted a defensive attitude and you can no longer control your drinking. This aspect is also mentioned in the definition of alcoholism.
