If you want your home to look professionally cleaned, you need to work in the same way as a home cleaning professional. That may sound obvious, and indeed it is, but to achieve great results, you have to think about the job as you would were you being paid to do it. If you were, you would want to get the chores done in as short a time as possible, while getting the best results you could so that you get repeat business. Try imagining you are responsible for a tenancy cleaning, which someone else will quality check when you are done. To help you, consider the following suggestions, adapt them to your needs, and start cleaning!

First of all, decide how much time you are going to allow yourself. If you only have an hour or two, you will need to limit what you do to fit into that time. If you have all day, you can spring clean your entire home very effectively. You may only want to do this every few months. Alternatively, you could do one room a week as thoroughly as you would in a spring clean and work your way through the whole house on a cyclical basis.

Secondly, decide what your priorities are. Get those done first, ...
... working your way down the list in order of importance. An example list might look like the following:

Windows
Floors
Shelves and other surfaces
Sinks/basins and faucets
Walls and ceilings
Soft furnishings
Ornaments and mirrors (polishing)

Alternatively, you may want to make your list room by room, or task by task (vacuuming, dusting, polishing, etc.). I find it helps to write lists for almost any set of tasks I set myself, not least because I love checking off the chores I have done as I work down the list!

If you’re cleaning the whole house, and you have more than one floor, it’s best to work from the top down, both in terms of tidying and putting things away, and when doing the actual cleaning. This way, you can bring things downstairs that need bringing down before you take up what needs taking up, thus making space before you refill it! Also, vacuuming downwards means that some of the dust thrown up into the air on the top floor will float down to the next floor and be vacuumed up there.

Before you start, though, gather together the equipment you need. I find an open-top toolbox invaluable for keeping home cleaning equipment in. I keep it in the cupboard with all my cleaning fluids, polishes, clean dusters and cloths in place so it’s always ready for me, and it makes it easier to carry everything with you from one room to another.

Finally, whenever you finish cleaning for the day, make sure you put all your used dusters in the wash, rinse out all your wet cloths thoroughly, dry them, and put them back in the box. Now you will be ready for your next ‘tenancy cleaning’ day!
