Cholesterol may be defined as a waxy fat or lipid produced by the liver. It is essential for assisting normal body functioning. Cholesterol forms the outer layer or membrane of body cells. It determines cell membrane permeability. It is essential for the metabolisms of certain fat soluble vitamins like A, D, K and E. Cholesterol also assists the production of bile, production of hormones secreted by the adrenal glands and even the production of sex hormones. Cholesterol is of the following three types:

1. LDL, also often known as bad cholesterol, is required for transporting cholesterol from liver to cells. But if excess LDL is produced, it may collect in blood, heightening the risk of life-threatening arterial diseases.

2. HDL, also often known as good cholesterol, takes cholesterol from body cells back to liver. HDL reduces the risk of arterial diseases.

3. Triglycerides are a chemical form of body fat. Triglycerides in combination with cholesterol constitutes the plasma lipid or blood fat. A part of our calorie consumption goes unused by our body tissues. That part is converted to triglycerides and stored ...
... in body cells, and is used to supply energy to the body only in times of starvation.

People with cholesterol readings beyond 6mmol/liter are said to have high cholesterol. The normal average level approved by the medical fraternity is less than 5mmo/liter.
