The Significance Of Church Goods
Have you ever wondered what the significance of various church goods is? Why is it that some very specific church goods are used? Why are they used in the way that they are? If you have ever been concerned about the significance of church goods, you have come to the right place. Read on to find some illuminating information on some church goods like Church candles and holy water as well as church wine.
Church Candles
Church candles can be seen at churches at various times. During official church services referred to as Liturgy, like Mass for instance, candles are lit to add solemnity to the occasion. Church candles can also be found on stands that are lit by devotees. These are known as vigil lights or votive candles. Typically, they are lit when the devotee is praying for a specific result. Often times, when devotees are praying for results on behalf of other people, they light church candles as well. As you can see, church candles are an intrinsic part of the faith, communally as well as individually.
Holy Water
Holy water is that water that a priest has already sanctified. It is used ...
... for two main purposes. On the one hand, it is used for spiritual cleansing. In this context, it can be used for blessing a person, a thing or a location with the blessings of the Lord. On the other hand, it is used as a means to ward off evil. It is interesting to note that while its use for blessing is common across Christianity; its use for warding off evil is practiced only in Catholicism. Nonetheless, it is as important, or perhaps more important than even church candles when it comes to official church services and is amongst the most important church goods.
Church Wine
Church wine is one of those church goods that have its origin in the very life of Christ. Church wine is had in celebration of Christ’s Last Supper. It represents the blood of Christ that every Christian can partake of and hence be blessed. Similarly, consecrated bread is considered to be the body of Christ that Christian can be blessed by. There is one fascinating aspect to the history of church wine. As you are no doubt aware, not every region can grow grapes to make red wine. It is important for the church wine to be red to be able to signify Christ’s blood. But, in the olden days, it was also not easy to transport red wine to every Christian kingdom in the world. So, only the priest sipped the red wine and not the laity. Thankfully, today there are many good suppliers of church goods around the world and the problem no longer rises.
