Choose A Free Standing Bag That Is Perfect For Your Fighting Style
When just beginning to learn kickboxing, boxing, or MMA fighting, buying a free standing bag is one of the most important decisions you can make. Not only that, you get a outstanding workout from this, even if you are into competing. Although, there are a handful of different types of free standing bags for you to choose from and it is important to get the right kind for your style of fighting and for your own personal needs. Here are some recommendations on choosing a bag that you will enjoy.
Check out your working out zone, noting how much space you have to put in your free standing bag. Be sure that you have five to ten feet of area all around your bag, so that you can train adequately. You will want enough space, so that you don't punch over a lamp or hit a wall on accident (this is never fun). Also, be aware of the height of your bag, being certain that you don't choose one too tall.
You also want to decide on the most appropriate way to fill the bag, so that it has the right amount of weight for you. In my experience, water is the best way to fill it for a realistic weight that moves similar to ...
... how your opponent would move. Sand is another option as well as a wide variety of other things you could use. I'd stick with water though, because it is also easy to get and cheap, as you can get it out of your tap.
The material that your bag is made of will also make a difference as to how useful it is in your practice. Some people like leather, but I have found it to be too expensive for the benefits. I work with high density foam, because the firmness seems just right. Not only that, but it also lasts a long time.
Don't forget to look at the diverse forms of your free standing bag as well. There are the bags that look like half of a person, that a lot of people like. Other's like a bigger bag with target areas to hit. I use a human-shaped bag in my fighting and I recommend it to those who compete. The feel is very much like how it would feel if you were to strike a human. However, I would go to your local training center and try out a number of different bags before making your purchase.
