After Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth can be very painful and harmful to your oral and overall health. Wisdom teeth can affect the surrounding teeth, gums and jaw bone. They normally present themselves during the late teenage and early adult years. To prevent wisdom teeth from causing you discomfort and potentially damaging your other molars, many dental professionals recommend that they be removed.
The process of extracting a wisdom tooth depends on the nature of the particular tooth. Some wisdom teeth emerge from the soft tissue or your gums. These teeth can be removed in a simply fashion because it is already exposed. Wisdom teeth that are enclosed beneath the gum line and near the jaw bone require a much more intensive process. Wisdom teeth may develop at horizontal and vertical angles within your mouth. Depending on the position of the tooth, your dentist will be able to determine the method of extraction.
Common extraction procedures for wisdom teeth that are beneath the surface is to apply local, intravenous or general anesthesia, make an incision and pull the tooth out using pliers or forceps. This process may be repeated for each ...
... tooth during one time period. Many dentists recommend pulling at least two wisdom teeth out in one sitting. Wisdom teeth removal may require cutting bone matter as well.
After the removal has been done, you need to be aware of what to expect next.
1) You will be in a lot of pain. You may need to take prescribed or over the counter pain medication.
2) You will bleed heavily. Gauze may be used to absorb the blood.
3) Your face will become swollen, especially in the area where the tooth was removed.
4) You will not be able to eat solid foods that require chewing. You will need to adopt a liquid diet for a few days.
5) You should avoid smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol during the healing process.
6) You should not clean your mouth in a rough manner. This will allow blood to clot.
Removing your wisdom teeth can also be risky. There are complications that may arise afterward.
1) Dry Socket: This occurs when the blood does not clot or the clot has been damaged or displaced. A dry or empty socket exposes the tissue and bone to food particles and air. This can cause added pain and discomfort. Medication is needed in this situation.
2) Infection: After your wisdom teeth are taken out, you need to guard yourself against infection. This can be done through rinsing with salt water or taking antibiotics. If you notice pus, have a fever or excessive swelling and pain, you may have developed an infection.
3) Other complications may include jaw fracture, numbness and sinus problems.
Before you decide to have your wisdom teeth removed, you need to be prepared for the aftermath. Consult with your dentist to discuss the position of your wisdom teeth, the removal strategy and the healing process. Request an appointment today.
