Tips On Choosing The Right Climbing Shoes
There are many different varieties of climbing shoes to suit many different types of climbing activity. They are the interface between you and the rock and help you stick to the
rock better, and the wrong fit or style will hold you back. So choosing the right model and size of rock climbing shoe is very important for climbing performance and comfort. To
start we are going to give you some tips and suggestions on how to choose the right rock climbing shoes.
First step is to determine the type of climbing shoes according to your needs. Gym climbing? Bouldering? Faces? Cracks? Off-widths? You need to find the right rock climbing
shoes for you. What do we mean by that? There are a lot of shoes out there varying in size, style, model, and certainly price. Do you spend most of your time bouldering, sport
climbing or trad climbing? There are rock climbing shoes designed specifically for each of these purposes. If you choose to climb only on indoor walls and to boulder, a light
and snug-fitting pair of slipper-style rock shoes is adequate.
Look around at your local crag and gym. ...
... Ask climbing partners what they are wearing and why. Search for reviews. Some climbing shops offer walls to try out the equipment, so
take the chance and try if the shoe fits. Try on every shoe in the place. Ruin the salesperson's day.
Pay attention on the materials of the shoes. Shoe uppers are either leather or synthetic. Leather shoes (lined and unlined) offer the easiest care, including deodorizing.
Unlined leather shoes will stretch up to a full size after a couple dozen pitches. Lined shoes will only stretch about 1/3 a size, while synthetic shoes do not stretch at all.
There are primarily four different types of lasts on rock shoes: board-lasted lace-up, board-lasted Velcro, slip-lasted lace-up and slip-lasted slipper.
Make sure it fits. No matter what kind of shoe you end up buying, it should feel tight, but should not cause pain. Most important for climbing is to know your toe shape. Is your
big toe the longest or do you have a Morton's Toe. If you feel like slipping in the shoe take it smaller also if it hurts a little. Your feet can swell up to a full size during
the day. Go for a walk, run or, better yet, climb before you shop. Weight is a big factor in hiking boots when an extra pound on your feet can feel like a dozen on a long day.
