Last year saw the rise of the urban maxi, but this year the look is less structured and more free flowing. The new trend for a softer silhouette makes the maxi dress the perfect choice. As a new alternative to the urban maxi look which was heavily tailored, the must have maxi of this year will be more free flowing and ethereal. More feminine fabrics move to the fore including sensuous silks and satins, flirty lace and pretty sheer layering. And utilise the earthy colour palette of the season as maxis look fabulous in browns, sands and buffs.

If you love maxi styles but want to keep the look fresh for 2011 then simply make a change of colour. Alongside the big move towards natural earth colours, fruity citrus shades were also big on the spring and summer catwalks. Choose between bright lemons and limes to tangy orange, as the bold style of the maxi is strong enough to carry shades as bright as these. ... life into your maxi dress from last summer, simply throw on some bright and fruity citrus accessories.

Prints often make a return for summer. This spring and summer sees a strong trend for bold trippy psychedelic prints and because of the bold shape of the maxi cut, the two work perfectly together to create an outfit that is guaranteed to turn heads. Besides psychedelic prints, look out for tropical fruits prints. Fruits have become the fashionistas print motif of the season, so go for anything exotic like pineapples and coconuts, bananas to oranges.

There is a new movie inspired trend for 2011 as this year designers have taken a new muse in the devilishly seductive Natalie Portman movie The Black Swan. Ballet themes can be seen running through the spring catwalk shows as well as high street fashion stores. Look for maxi dress styles with traditional ballet skirts like the romantic or bell tutu. You can also look for maxi dresses in pretty pale pinks and ballet nudes, as well as detailing such as pleating.
