Contrary to logic, a small vehicle doesn't always give you the best fuel economy.
With the recent trend of higher gas prices, many buyers have turned to buying smaller Used Cars to compensate.
Make sure you ask the Used Car Dealerships the following questions prior to purchasing a small used car in the hopes of saving some money and gas dollars.

Thinking the following questions through, so you don't end up making a mistake that will cause you to swear off small Used Cars forever.

This may sound a little over-the-top but how about all the customers that purchased diesel vehicles in the 80's? Unfortunately those cars were awful and some people still won't buy one today. Worse still is that even when experts prove the diesel is better on fuel than most gas cars, opinions aren't budging.

Which size of 'small' used car is a match for me?

Surprisingly width is the most important factor here. Hardly ever will find a vehicle that doesn't have adequate seat space for someone up to just over six feet.
Now with that said, you can have issues with ...
... shoulder room if you're a 'bigger' person. Even more-so if you've another 'bigger' person beside you. Checking the width room should not be overlooked.

Why do you need the used car?

Something most Used Car Dealerships don't want you to know. When buying Used Cars, bigger isn't usually better. If the car is normally going to be used just to get you back and forth to work, then smaller is better. Even if you need a larger vehicle a few times a year, it would be cheaper for you to buy a small used car and rent a larger one the few times you really need it.

What fuel economy will I get I get?

Contrary to logic, not all small cars get the best fuel economy. For example a mid-sized Hyundai Sonata (2009), will save you one hundred sixty two dollars when compared to a Volvo C30 of the same year. Bottom line is the size of the car isn't always reflective of the fuel economy.

What layout do I need?

What number of seats do you require? Do you require versatility? Unfortunately car manufacturers have just started designing small cars that are fun to drive and comfortable. Although there are still some great Used Cars out there that fit the bill.

Can a small car be a family car?

Well the numbers have to work. If you can't downsize you can always save money by keeping your car tuned and laying off the pedal.

Before buying a used car make sure you do your homework. A little work can save you a lot of money and hassle.
