The National Hockey League is the highest level of competition for profession hockey players around the world. The goal that every team shoots for each season is winning the Stanley Cup. The format of the playoffs has changed over time, but each season the league’s goal is for the best team to win the Stanley Cup Playoffs in order to become Stanley Cup Champions.

The format in the 1978 Stanley Cup playoffs was slightly different to the previous year, but it was very similar to previous year in most ways. There were 12 teams that qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. These teams were determined by their standing in their respective conferences. There were 6 teams from each conference picked and 12 teams total in the playoffs.

In this particular season there was not a lot of parity in the Clarence Campbell Conference. Every team in the Patrick Division qualified for the playoffs, leaving just 2 spots from the Smythe Division. The Smythe Division was led by the Black Hawks, who had a decent season, but their second representative was very poor. The Colorado Rockies were terrible during the season and finished ...
... with a 19-40-21 record. The next worst team in the conference had 11 more wins than the Rockies.

Fortunately, the Prince of Wales Conference featured more deserving teams and there weren’t too many poor teams in the playoffs that season. Every team finished with at least 31 wins.

The teams that qualified for the playoffs in descending order were the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs, Atlanta Flames, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and the Colorado Rockies.

The first round of play featured three sweeps as the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers managed to advance without dropping a game. The Buffalo Sabres also advanced to the next round of the playoffs, winning the 3 game series 2-1.

The Toronto Maple Leafs took their momentum into the next series and they had quite a battle with the New York Islanders. The Islanders were the favored team, but the Maple Leafs played them tough and sent the series to 7 games. The Maple Leafs succeeded in pulling off the upset in game 7 over the Islanders to advance to the semifinals.

The Montreal Canadiens easily won their series over the Red Wings in 5 games and the Boston Bruins beat the Chicago Black Hawks in 4 games. The Philadelphia Flyers also easily won their series 4 games to 1.

The Canadiens and the Maple Leafs played in the semifinals. Unfortunately, the magic wore off for Toronto. They were unable to take a single game from the Canadiens and were swept in 4 games.

The Boston Bruins and the Flyers played in the semifinals for the second consecutive year the Bruins came out on top again, earning a chance to play the Canadiens.

The Canadiens won over Boston in the finals again to become the 1978 Stanley Cup Champions, winning the series 4 games to 2 over the Bruins.
