One of the problems that dog owners may encounter is the excessive barking of their dogs. Dogs use barking as a natural way to communicate. However, some dogs just cannot seem to stop from barking once they started.

Frequent and too much barking can be quite annoying to neighbors as much as it is to the dog owner. To put a stop on this unwanted behavior, it is important to determine the reasons of excessive barking. It can be a sign of a behavior problem. Properly identify the incident that causes the barking to come up with a solution. Some owners may think that giving treats will pacify the dog. In some cases, this may work, but if not, a bark collar can be a good alternative.

Dog owners and trainers can choose among different types of bark controlling devices. The automatic units are appropriate when the owner is not around to control the barking of the dog. Examples of these are the citronella sprays, shock collar, and the sonic collar which works based on the same principle. They activate and initiate corrective stimulus when the dog barks. Spray bark collars, squirt citronella in the face of the dog when the dog barks that can surprise them and interrupt the barking. Shock and Sonic collars have the same principle as the spray collars, only, a shock collar delivers a static sensation and sonic delivers a sound. These collars are not intended to punish nor harm the dogs. It is created for the purpose of dog training and behavior modification.

Other collars that can help you in behavior modifications are those called as hand-held. Hand-held units includes the choke and prong collars. The collar slides to tighten on the neck of your dog when the correction is given. These can be used whenever you take the dog for a walk and the dog has the inclination of barking at people. These types of collar are also used on other training such as obedience training.

Bark collars are effective devices for behavior modification of your dog. Your dog does not necessarily need to wear these devices at all times. This should be removed once the training is completed. Behavior modification such as eliminating excessive barking may take some time. Proper reinforcement will help to achieve the goal at shorter time.
