Considering An Occupational Therapy Job
Occupational Therapy jobs are in great demand. A job in occupational therapy requires not only an extensive understanding of physical health but mental health as well. It requires the professional to have a wide understanding of human mental and physical health issues. Not only will the professional be dealing with therapy that is rehabilitative for physical injury but the occupational therapist will deal with assisting patients who have mental, behavioral and emotional disorders. They will through implementing therapy plans help these patients to overcome the setbacks of their conditions so that they can be more able to enjoy their day-to-day lives.
Originally this profession was to help patients in their work to help maximize their efficiency and productivity and make them happier in their job and to help people with disabilities through therapy have a more normal day-to-day life. Now, however it has taken on a much wider field as our mental and physical health are tied together so are treated as one.
An Occupational Therapy job differs from a Physical Therapy job in that it has a much broader range, it ...
... provides mental and physical therapy while Physical Therapy mainly deals with the motor aspect, or physical health, such as helping a patient to walk again. Occupational Therapy Jobs could be more closely compared to Psychology jobs or Psychiatry. But while Psychology jobs and Psychiatry jobs deal more closely with the diagnostic aspect of mental health, jobs in Occupational Therapy deal more with the therapeutic. OT is really much more of a hands-on therapy to help patients with their medical conditions.
OT training usually includes many elements from different fields of science for the course requirements such as: biology, sociology, psychology, medicine, and normative ethics. Indeed there are a large number of courses you can choose from in college. If you are considering having a career in the OT field you need to attain a Master’s degree from an OT school. It is also required that you take the licensing or registering exam. These licensing exams are administered by the National Certification Board of Occupational Therapy. OTA’s or COTA’s, instead of taking Baccalaureate and Master’s Degrees can also take the programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy to qualify for licensure exam.
If you are passionate about helping others and enjoy science, this field may be something that you would be interested in. An Occupation Therapy job will not only teach you how to help people through therapy with their physical health but teach you how to use therapy to help people with unique mental issues. There are a number of hospitals, clinics, and private practices that have jobs in this field. There is also the ability to join the growing number of traveling OT professionals. These traveling OTs travel throughout the country filling temporarily the open OT positions at hospitals and other medical facilities. So if you have a desire to see the country and places, cultures and communities that you’ve never had a chance to visit before all at the expense of your employer than this may be an option for you to consider.
