The organizations are experiencing exploding data growth. In addition, the new stringent regulatory compliance requirements, heightened security concerns and competitive business environment have sky-rocketed the data storage needs. Today’s high-speed information systems and rapidly expanding server environments call for DDS backup tape format. Sony’s backup media devices achieve higher recording density, fast throughput rate and longer media life necessary to satisfy the requirements of rapidly growing backup environments. Sony is the co-inventor of DDS (digital data storage) format.

Sony was the first company to introduce the fourth generation DDS4 tape drives. Sony DDS-4 tape is the best storage solution for corporate servers, commercial applications, mid-sized companies, high end workstations and small networks. Sony DGD150P, DDS4 cartridge can house 20GB native data. In order to increase the recording density, Sony has introduced ultra-fine base film that features narrow track pitch. This enables the small sized DDS4 tape to backup greater data amounts with supreme reliability.

Sony SDT-11000 is a robust ...
... DDS-4 drive that enhances the storage value by providing support to a broader range of IT infrastructures. SDT-11000 is the fastest drive in its class. It achieves an exceptional 4.8 Mbps compressed throughput rate. Great news is that all previous DDS tapes can be used with SDT-11000 drive. It cannot only read the previous three generations of DDS, but can also write data with greater reliability. Therefore the read/write compatible tapes are DDS1, DDS2, DDS 3 and DDS 4. The existing DDS customers can seamlessly upgrade their tape storage system, and enjoy long term reliability knowing that their tape investment is secured.

Sony DDS4 tape devices deliver superior value, reliability and performance for backup supplications ranging from entry level servers to mid-sized IT environments. Sony SDT-11000 drive achieves extraordinary linear recording density of 122 KBPI with the help of its helical scan recording technology. Sony has developed an innovative “super head cleaner” system that prevents accumulation of dust and airborne contaminants on the drive head. As a result, the drive and media can perform reliable backup operations over a longer time period. Robust “hyper metal” drive heads have been introduced in Sony SDT-11000, which improve the data integrity with an unmatched MTBF of 250,000 power on hours.

The next higher capacity Sony DDS tapes are:

DGDAT72, Sony DAT-72 tape or DDS-5
DGDAT160, Sony DAT160 tape or DDS-6
DGDAT320, Sony DAT-320 tape or DDS-7

Imation, Quantum, IBM, HP, Fuji, TDK and Quantum are some of the other major DDS tape brands. The native recording capacity of DAT-72, DAT-160 and DAT-320 tapes are 36 GB, 80 GB and 160 GB respectively. Data transfer speed of SDT-11000 drive has been enhanced by 100% over its predecessor DDS-3 drive. SDT-11000 drive achieves an impressive 17.28 GB/hour compressed backup rate. The capacity of data buffer has increased to 10 MB, which enables the Sony SDT-11000 drive to quickly compressed the data and ensure consistent performance with superior data integrity.

With Sony DDS 4 tape devices, the data administrators can manage their growing storage requirements at a greater value. Product and software names mentioned throughout this article are trademarks and are sole property of their owners.
