Looking Into Dialysis Jobs?
There are many different types of dialysis jobs, and the three most common are in either dialysis centers, out in the field (home visits), and teaching dialysis to others—mostly teaching how to run the machines.
The job of being a dialysis nurse is a hard one. It can be a very emotionally draining position as most of the patients that you come into contact with are very ill, in some cases terminal. So therefore it requires a certain type of personality to be able to do this job and that is something that should always be kept in mind. The requirement for learning different types of equipment and its use is very important to these jobs. It can be challenging and also very rewarding to serve in this field.
You can elect to serve in dialysis centers in a hospital if you wish to work in a much more controlled atmosphere. This is sometimes the recommended way of starting out. The centers handle many patients at once and measure your ability to keep your cool and necessarily keep yourself detached form the patient as it is important in the delivery of quality care for patients who may be terminally ill. A ...
... medical center is a much more supervised setting with patients that are seen constantly. This setting assists in providing a more detached approach.
More seasoned dialysis nurses may be more suited for different dialysis jobs such as positions that take them out in the field. These seasoned veterans will actually visit patients in their homes to give them treatment. Due to the fact that people who require this treatment can in some cases become too ill to come to centers they may require this type of service. Seeing a patient in their own environment is something that a seasoned professional may be more able to handle then a person who is new to the field as it, again, takes an ability to remain somewhat detached. You will need to learn extensively the equipment that you will be bringing to the patient for procedures and be proficient in its use. But the benefit of only seeing one patient at a time is sometimes appealing to the more seasoned professionals.
Some jobs involve teaching patients how to use the equipment. Sometimes it is necessary to travel to rural locations to teach patients how to use these machines. Patients that live in rural locations may have to travel many miles to get to a center so therefore may elect to have access to a machine at home instead of traveling and that is where the technician or professional can aide their caregiver by teaching them how to use these machines. This type of job may be an ideal one in this field as it allows for little or no relationship with the patient other than in most cases teaching the caregiver how to use the machine.
