People's Lives Can Be Protected With An Aed
An AED, or automatic external defibrillator, that is available when a sudden cardiac arrest happens can save that person's life. There have been several stories in the news of these little machines saving the lives of all kinds of people. With devices available in many places, like in stores and at gymnasiums, more lives can be saved. However, despite the benefits that these little machines can provide, only 20 percent of police cars have one and very few homes have one. This is really horrible because most sudden cardiac arrests happen in the home (57-70 percent).
A sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is when the heart suddenly stops beating in the right rhythm for some reason. SCA is usually caused by ventricular fibrillation (VF) which is a certain type of heartbeat that is irregular. Getting the heart back into a regular beating rhythm nearly always requires a shock to the heart. SCA is the number one cause of death in this country with over 300,000 victims succumbing to it each year. The disheartening reality is that less than 5 percent of people who have a sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital survive. ...

If a person receives a shock from these miracle machines within one minute of an SCA, their chances of survival are around 90 percent. For every minute past the first, the chances of survival plummet anywhere from 7 to 10 percent each and every minute. Without a shock in ten minutes or less, the chance of surviving an SCA drops to five percent. Even at half that time, five minutes, the odds of surviving jump up to between 30 and 50 percent for the person.
Utilizing an AED is simple. Attaching the person who is having the SCA to the machine is first. Every AED has step by step voice instructions that makes it easy to know what to do. It gives easy to follow directions on placing and then it checks the heart's beat. Whether or not to give a shock to the person is then determined by the AED and it explains exactly how to do it if so required. The unit gives a shock only if it determines that one is needed and will tell the user what to do. This takes all of the guess work out of operating machine and saves a lot of time by not having you read and understand directions.
Deciding to purchase an AED is an important step toward protecting people's lives. Some states actually mandate certain businesses have one on hand at all times. Remember that most SCAs occur at home which makes owning one at home an important item too.
