If there is one thing you can say about Emergency lightbars it's this; they are essential equipment on any first response or emergency vehicle of any description. Without the proper lighting on vehicles, the safety of the personnel is compromised and the public have no early visual warnings of trouble or danger on our roads. Lighting plays a huge part in road safety, and that isn't just the lighting on emergency or first response vehicles. All vehicles have lights, indicators, hazard warning, fog lamps and internal lights. Motoring on today's roads is fraught with danger and the lights we all have play a part in road safety.

Of course, we have all driven behind someone who appears to have lost the use of their indicator lights or use them inappropriately. A stationary car at the side of the road will be a hazard and potential danger to other drivers so some form of lights are needed to advise it is there. We recognize the importance of lighting on our own vehicles so imagine the importance attached to it for police, fire and medical vehicles. Emergency lightbars do help save lives, and whilst that may sound ...
... a bit on the dramatic side it is in fact true. Lightbars provide us with a very effective early visual warning of something that needs our attention.

When we see flashing Emergency lightbars ahead of us on the roadside, we know we have to take appropriate action. That appropriate action will be public knowledge as most states now have a move over law that will tell us what is expected of us in such circumstances. Don't think you can ignore the law and plead ignorance as that is no defense in law and you will get a fine and penalty points on your license. The move over laws were introduced and implemented over the last few years in an attempt to help save first responders from injury or death at roadside incidents. The deaths at roadside have increased and it's mainly due to careless and inattentive driving on our part.

Any death in road traffic accident is tragic but when the death could have been avoided with a bit more care and attention to driving it is more so. The move over law in your state will also have advice and guidance on you need to do when you hear a siren and see flashing Emergency lightbars in your rear view mirror. In most cases, you need to drop your speed and move to an inner lane so the vehicle can pass at speed safely. The same is true of a roadside incident and we need to drop speed and move to an adjacent lane away from the accident or incident. It really should be common sense but it would appear many drivers drove appallingly which lead to secondary injury and deaths from the first incident.

Emergency lightbars are versatile and suit many purposes and emergency services. What is needed by the police would be completely different to that needed by a medical vehicle. Whilst their lighting needs vary all emergency and first response vehicles, need some lighting no matter how little. We are all familiar with the lightbars on top of most emergency vehicles but we should be aware that they are commonly fitted inside vehicles and in other areas of the vehicle. Look out for any Emergency lightbars on all types of first response vehicles, as they are there to warn and inform you of potential danger.
