6 Steps To Post-collision Recovery
1. Prepare for the Worst
Know what you are going to need and have it ready ahead of time. That means keeping a first aid kit in the vehicle, having all the proper documentation for the vehicle and insurance information (auto and health), a notepad to take down information, a seat-belt cutter, and a camera to capture the crash scenario and damage.
Also, print out this list and keep it with you!
2. Safety first
Care for safety issues right away. First, make sure that you are alright, then your passengers, and then other drivers and passengers that were involved. Do not move anyone with head or neck injuries. Instead, stabilize the head so it does not move and call an emergency vehicle.
Apply pressure to badly bleeding wounds using clean towels or even clothing.
Then, call the police.
3. When you know everyone is safe...
Get the contact and insurance information from all drivers and passengers. Also, take down the names and contact information of the witnesses. You might need their testimony.
When getting information from other drivers, make sure to record names, driver's ...
... license numbers, insurance information, and registration numbers. Protect yourself from fraud by checking that the names given to you match the names on their identification.
Next, make notes and take pictures of the accident scene. Draw a diagram of how the collision happened - noting the streets and positions of the vehicles - and get corroboration from a witness. Photograph the damage done to the cars involved, as well as the debris and such on the road.
Then, wait for the police.
4. Who to talk to and how
Always stay calm and polite. Don't sign anything unless the police or emergency workers require it. Never admit fault to anyone - especially the police. If they give you a hard time, just ask if you are being detained. If not, you don't have to do what they say. Still, everyone will most likely try to be helpful - and you should too.
5. Repairs and Claims
You will want to get your claim in within 24-hours if possible. Use accurate and complete information.
When it comes to repairing vehicle damage, be very active and aggressive. Make sure you are working with trustworthy people, and don't let them do anything that seems like extra work. Be very vigilant for fraud. If they do any repairs you do not need, your insurer will leave the bill to you alone.
Test out the vehicle to make sure all the repairs are correct and complete. Even things like paint - take a close look to make sure it matches.
6. Use Auto Insurance Quotes
Your auto insurance rates very well may go up after a collision, especially if you are at-fault. There's not much you can do to avoid this, but you might be able to drop some coverage or raise your deductible. When these things don't work, you can always look for a new insurer.
Online auto insurance quotes are the quickest, most effective way to shop for car insurance. See all the policy details and compare rates from the top insurers in your area in minutes with auto insurance quotes.
