The worth of a diamond became more evident in the Middle Ages. Owners of mining companies would encourage the myth that diamonds were poisonous. It was evident that mineworkers were swallowing diamonds to smuggle them out of the mine and mine owners lost a great deal of money. Other areas of the world woke up to the fact that diamonds were big business. Huge mines were discovered in South Africa and there were finds in Borneo and Brazil.
