Chief Fire Officer Backs Calls For Sprinklers In New Homes

The National Fire Sprinkler Network – a not for profit coalition of the fire sector with representation from all the UK’s fire and rescue services – wants to stop unwanted and unnecessary deaths from fires in domestic properties by having automatic fire sprinkler protection systems.

In Wales, proposed legislation to approve the fitting of domestic sprinkler systems is expected to be passed next month. Now the NFSN wants this extended to England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and CFO Frayne is backing this call.

CFO Frayne said: “The fire at Hulland Ward serves as a reminder that a fire in the home, whatever the cause, can have a devastating effect on families and leave communities in mourning. Yet the risk to human life in fires like these can easily be minimised.

“Automatic sprinkler systems are exceptionally effective through their ability to control a fire before it gets to life threatening proportions. There has never been a multiple fire death, anywhere in the world, in a building which had been fitted with a working sprinkler system, designed to the standard appropriate for the purpose intended.

It is only through legislation to make sure we fit sprinkler systems that we will stop tragedies like the recent one in Derbyshire happening again.”
