Signed by President Obama, the Zadroga Bill has put into law a $4.3 billion commitment to help ailing 9/11 volunteers and responders. Specially designed for firefighters and other 9/11 first responders, the bill puts aside the amount for medical treatment and monitoring. Another intended use of the assigned compensation includes compensation for economic loss, for those suffering the long-tail health effects of the Ground Zero clean-up. $1.8 billion, out of the assigned amount, is set to be used for the treatment and monitoring of those who inhaled or were otherwise exposed to the debris and toxic dust at Ground Zero.

After scaling down the cost of the bill considerably, from $7.4 billion to $4.2 billion, it passed quickly. The bill has been consistently providing health care benefits and monitoring for tens of thousands of first-responders, construction workers and Lower Manhattan residents. These victims are the ones who were exposed to World Trade Center dust in the weeks following the attacks. In addition to this, the bill also provides monetary awards for emergency workers and others who had fallen ill and lost wages as a result of exposure to the dust.
