In the history of horse racing, there are a few horses that seem to stand out from the rest. A few of the horses that are remembered above all others include Man o’ War, Secretariat and Citation. After those horses the next one to be remembered would have to be Kelso.

Kelso was born in April of 1957 to the sire Your Host and the dam Maid of Flight. He was owned by Bohemia Stable and trained by Dr. John Lee and Carl Hanford.

While the horse is remembered as one of the best horses of all-time, it is interesting to note that things actually did not start out so hot for the horse. When the horse was young he seemed to be small and unruly and there was little reason to believe that the horse would ever be anything special. His owner had him gelded at a young age, in hopes that the horse would calm down a bit. This did not work and the horse was never quite as nice and calm as many people would like their horses to be.

The parents of Kelso were unproven and there was little reason to believe that Kelso would be anything because of them. However, Kelso was the grandson of Count Fleet. Count Fleet was a former ...
... winner of the Triple Crown and is also known as one of the best horses of all-time.

Kelso kicked things off with a lot of success in 1960 as he was named the 3 year old Male champion and the Horse of the Year. He won 8 of the 9 races that he took part in in 1960 and looked like a dominant horse. His great racing continued into the next season as he won the next two races in 1961. The two years combined featured an 8 race winning streak.

Kelso was named the Horse of the Year 5 times in his career between 1960 and 1964. This was not only amazing in that time, but it remains the only time in horse racing history that a horse would become a 5-tim winner of the horse of the year award.

Over the course of his career Kelso won 39 times in 63 starts. Out of the 63 starts Kelso managed to finish in the money in 84 percent of the starts.

The horse showed an ability to win in all sorts of races. These races had differing lengths, handicaps and competition, but Kelso always seemed to be among the best horses in the field.

One interesting fact is that there was once a simulated race between the best horses in history. In this simulated race it came down to Kelso and Man O’ War, the horse widely considered to be the best horse of all-time. In this simulated race, Kelso managed to come out on top, beating Man O’ War by a half of a length.

Kelso was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1967 and will forever be remembered as one of the best horses that we’ve ever seen.
