The World Cup tournament is the most popular event around the world as people all around the world tune in to support their country as they compete.

In 1978 the World Cup took place in Argentina. This would be convenient for Argentina’s soccer team as they were already one of the top teams in the world. This meant that a team that was already great would have the support of almost all of the fans in attendance in every game they played throughout the tournament. This would prove to be a huge advantage to the Argentinean team throughout this tournament as their play was inspired throughout the course of the 1978 World Cup.

The inspired play of Argentina would eventually lead to their team becoming the 1978 World Cup Champions.

While Argentina did go on to win the tournament, they were not perfect throughout the entire tournament. In the first round of the tournament Argentina played in a group with Italy, France and Hungary. ...
... The Argentinean team didn’t have much problem taking care of Hungary and France, but their game against Italy was a tough one.

They game was pretty much a defensive battle as both teams struggled to put the ball in the net. Italy finally managed to score in the 67th minute of play, putting the pressure on Argentina as they game clocked wound down. Argentina was unable to score a goal and ended up losing the game. While they were the losers of the game, they ended up in 2nd place in the group. This meant that they would advance to the next round of play.

Their next round of play was against Brazil, Poland and Peru. This would be a tough group as Brazil was known for being one of the best teams in the world and had maintained that reputation for years. In their first game of play the Argentinean team played against Poland and beat them 2-0. Brazil beat Peru 3-0 in their game, so Argentina and Brazil would both be 1-0 when they squared off.

Their game was a defensive battle as neither team managed to score a goal the entire game. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. This meant that they had identical records, but Brazil had outscored their opponents by one more goal than Argentina. The goal differential at the end of group play would decide which team would advance to the finals.

Argentina needed to beat their opponents by 2 more goals than Brazil did in the final game of play if they hoped to advance. Brazil won their game 3-1, meaning Argentina needed a 4 goal victory.

Argentina satisfied their need and then some as they beat down Peru with a 6-0 performance to advance to the final.

Argentina played the Netherlands in the final and took home the World Cup Championship with a 3-1 victory over the 2nd place finishers. Mario Kempes, a player for Argentina, was named the Golden Boot Winner as he scored 6 goals over the course of the tournament.
