Montreal Canadiens Dominate 1976 Stanley Cup Playoffs
In years past the playoffs would be split up by conference, where each conference would compete to send the best team from their conference to the Stanley Cup Finals. This season the NHL did not split up the teams, but instead made a seeding system from 1 to 12.
The first round featured games between the 4 and 12 seed, 5 and 11 seed, 7 and 8 seed and 6 and 9 seed.
The game between the 4 and the 12 seed featured the 4th seeded Buffalo Sabres and the St. Louis Blues. The series was a best of 3 game series and the Sabres came out on top, despite dropping a game to the Blues. They would advance to the next round of the playoffs to play against the winner of the 5 vs. 11 series.
The New York Islanders were the 5th seeded team and they played against the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks were unable to steal a single game and were beaten 2-0 by the Islanders. This meant ha the Islanders would play against the Sabres in the next round of the playoffs.
The Toronto Maple Leafs played against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round in the 7 vs. 8 matchup in the bottom half of the bracket. The Los Angeles ...
... Kings and Atlanta Flames would play in the 6 vs. 9 matchup. Ultimately, the Maple Leafs and the Kings would win their games. None of the higher seeded teams were upset in the first round of the playoffs. In fact, throughout the entire 1976 Stanley Cup playoffs, only one team was upset.
The Montreal Canadiens easily disposed of the Black Hawks in the 1 vs. 10 series. The Canadiens swept the Blackhawks and were the far superior team throughout the series.
In the other game in the top half of the bracket, the Sabres and Islanders played. This was one of the best series of all of the playoffs, and it was the only series in the playoffs where an upset occurred, although it was a minor upset. The Islanders were the 5th seed and they took out the 4th seeded Sabres 4 games to 2.
The Philadelphia Flyers took out the 7th seeded Maple Leafs in a series that as stretched to 7 games in order to advance to play against the Bruins, who took out the Kings in another series that was stretched to 7 games.
The Flyers and the Bruins had a series that was hardly competitive as the Bruins only managed to win 1 game in the series. The Flyers advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Montreal Canadiens dominated the Islanders, winning the series 4 games to 1 to advance to the Finals against the Flyers.
Both of these teams looked impressive entering the Finals, but it was not a competitive series. The Canadiens dominated the Flyers and won the series in 4 games to become Stanley Cup Champs.
