Keeping your teeth healthy requires a bit more effort than brushing your teeth for a few seconds after every meal. There are a few other steps you need to do on a regular basis if you want to ensure that you have the best oral health condition – and that your teeth and gums are as healthy as they can be for the longest possible time.

Tooth Brushing and Flossing - Regular and proper tooth brushing is essential in ensuring that your teeth and gums stay as healthy as possible. It is best to choose a toothbrush that can reach the parts of your mouth with ease, with soft bristles to avoid injuring the soft gum tissues. Keep in mind that you have to brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day, after every meal, to remove food debris that may be left behind by the food you ate. Dental flossing, on the other hand, will ensure that food particles that have not been removed by regular tooth brushing will be eliminated in between the teeth. Make it a habit to floss regularly, in combination with the regular tooth brushing practices.

Choose Good Toothpaste - Choosing good toothpaste will complement good ...
... and regular tooth brushing practices. Toothpaste that is fortified with fluoride will help protect your teeth from cavities; you may also choose toothpaste products that have other features corresponding to your dental health concerns, such as teeth whitening, breath-freshening, tooth sensitivity and even gum problems like gingivitis.

Well-Balanced Diet - Having a well-balanced diet is not only good for the body – it is also very good in the maintenance of good oral health. A diet rich in calcium can help the teeth stay strong; fruits and vegetables provide the teeth and the whole mouth with vitamins and the right amount of lubrication necessary to promote good oral health. It is best to include lots of water in your diet as well – it not only hydrates your whole body, but can act as a temporary cleansing agent after you eat.

Avoid These - It is best to avoid the consumption of food with too much sugar (such as candies, chocolates and cakes) that can lead to the break-down of the tooth enamel; the same thing goes for food and drinks that have a high acid content (soft drinks and fruit juices). Smoking and chewing tobacco should also be avoided, as these cause teeth stains that are difficult to remove; smoking and chewing tobacco can also cause damage to the teeth and oral tissues, and can lead to the development of oral cancer (among other cancers).

Precautions to Take - It is best to practice good dental health practices to avoid the development of health problems. Dental problems and diseases may affect other parts of the body if they are left untreated, and may even cause serious health concerns such as heart disease.

Fluoride Rinse - Using a fluoride rinse is effective in strengthening the tooth enamel, and in the prevention of tooth decay. The fluoride rinse should be used once or twice daily, after thoroughly brushing and flossing the teeth; the rinse should be vigorously gargled or swished inside the mouth for about a minute or so, after which the rinse should be spitted out. It is important not to have any food intake 30 minutes before and after the use of the fluoride rinse.

Regular Dental Visits - Regular dental check-ups will ensure that good oral health is maintained, and that any dental problems are detected (and treated) in their earliest stages. When you visit the dentist religiously every six months, you are not only making sure that your dental health is properly maintained – you can also avoid having to go through expensive and complicated dental treatments that could have been prevented with regular dental visits.
